The music industry is no stranger to the pressures and emotional strain that come with the pursuit of art. According to recent reports from the Musicians’ Union and Help Musicians UK, an overwhelming 80% of musicians experience mental health challenges, a statistic that’s both sobering and all too relatable.
My Journey Through the Dark: Battling Depression and Anxiety
I know these struggles personally. For years, I faced relentless waves of depression and anxiety, turning to unhealthy coping mechanisms like alcohol and drugs just to make it through. It seemed like a short-term relief from the pain but ultimately pulled me into a deeper spiral. This spiral reached its lowest point when I found myself in a full-blown mental health crisis, questioning everything.
The Turning Point: Discovering My Neurodivergence
In a turning point, I sought help through a psychiatric assessment, which changed my life. It was here that I learned I had undiagnosed ADHD and autism. But the path forward wasn’t simple or quick. After that initial assessment, it took two years to receive a formal diagnosis for both conditions, and yet another year to begin treatment. Through this process, I learned that untreated neurodivergent conditions often magnify the mental health struggles many of us face—and for musicians, the risks are even higher due to the demands of the industry.
Becoming an Advocate: Speaking Out for Neurodivergent Musicians
Today, I’m a neurodivergent musician advocate, raising awareness and doing everything in my power to prevent other artists from facing the same struggles. The recent tragic news of Liam Payne’s mental health battle and ADHD diagnosis highlights the harsh reality of what so many neurodivergent musicians go through. Without timely support and treatment, it’s easy to get stuck in survival mode, never quite able to thrive or find stability.
Finding Strength in Community
I know firsthand how isolating it can feel. In my darkest moments, I nearly lost everything. But finding a community, getting diagnosed, and finally receiving treatment saved my life. My goal now is to reach out to musicians who may be struggling in silence, unaware that neurodivergent conditions could be at the root of their challenges, or who may just be starting their journey to diagnosis and support.
Turning Survival into Thriving: There’s Hope
We’re not alone in this, and no musician should lose their life needlessly to untreated neurodivergent struggles. There is hope, there are resources, and there are people ready to help. Together, we can turn survival into a path toward thriving, and each story shared helps to break down the stigma around musician mental health.
